케임브릿지 사전은 'estranged'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you are estranged from your family or friends, you have had a serious argument with them and are no longer friendly with them(가족이나 친구들에게서 estranged 했다면, 그들과 심각하게 말다툼을 했고 더 이상 그들과 친한 관계가 아니라는 뜻이다)"

"It's sad to see someone estranged from their parents(누군가 가족과 소원해진 모습을 보는 것은 슬픈 일이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'estranged'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you are estranged from your family or friends, you have quarrelled with them and are not communicating with them(당씬의 가족이나 친구들로부터 estranged 했다면, 그들과 다투었고 현재 그들과 말하지 않는 사이라는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"He was laid to rest yesterday without a final goodbye from his estranged son(그는 사이가 소원해진 아들에게서 마지막 작별 인사도 듣지 못하고 어제 영원히 잠이 들었다)." 

"Joanna, 30, spent most of her twenties virtually estranged from her father(서른 살인 조애나는 20대 시절을 거의 다 아버지와 사실상 소원한 상태로 보냈다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'estranged'를 "not seeing friends or relatives very often, especially because of having fought with them(특히 그들과 싸웠기 때문에, 친구나 친척을 자주 보지 않는)"이라고 풀이했다.
