케임브릿지 사전은 'on the prowl'을 "moving around an area and looking for something or someone(어떤 지역을 돌아다니며 무언가 또는 누구를 찾는)"이라고 정의했다.

"On the way home I saw a raccoon on the prowl(집에 오는 길에 나는 먹이를 찾아 배회하는 라쿤을 봤다)."

콜린스 사전은 'on the prowl'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If an animal is on the prowl, it is hunting. If a person is on the prowl, they are hunting for something such as a sexual partner or a business deal(동물이 on the prowl 한다면, 사냥을 하는 것이다. 사람이 on the prowl 한다면, 성적인 파트너나 사업적인 거래 등을 찾아 사냥하는 것이다)."
