케임브릿지 사전은 'corny'를 "(especially of jokes, films, stories, etc.) showing no new ideas or too often repeated, and therefore not funny or interesting((특히 농담, 영화, 이야기 등이) 새로운 아이디어를 보여 주지 않거나 너무 자주 반복되며, 따라서 웃기거나 흥미롭지 않은)"라고 정의했다.

"corny jokes(진부한 농담)"

"I couldn't watch the whole movie - it was just too corny(그 영화 도저히 다 못 보겠더라. 너무 진부했어)."

콜린스 사전은 'corny'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as corny, you mean that it is obvious or sentimental and not at all original(어떤 것을 corny 하다고 묘사한다면, 그것이 뻔하거나 감상적이고 전혀 독창적이지 않다는 뜻이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"I know it sounds corny, but I'm really not motivated by money(진부하게 들린다는 거 알지만, 저는 정말 돈으로 동기 부여 받는 사람이 아닙니다)."

"...corny jokes(진부한 농담)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'corny'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "corny stories, jokes, songs etc have been used so much that they seem silly(corny한 이야기, 농담, 노래 등은 아주 많이 이용되어 바보 같아 보이는 것이다)."

"I know it sounds corny, but it was love at first sight(진부하게 들린다는 거 알지만, 첫눈에 사랑에 빠졌어)."
