[영어 공부] if nothing else(적어도, 최소한)

 

메리암웹스터 사전은 'if nothing else'를 "used to say that something is probably the only thing that is true, acceptable, desirable, or certain because there are no better/worse possibilities(어떤 것이 다른 더 좋은/나쁜 가능성이 없기 때문에 유일하게 진실하거나, 인정할 만하거나, 바람직하거나, 확실한 것이라고 말할 때 쓰는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"The food is cheap, if nothing else(적어도 그 음식은 싸니까)."

"If nothing else, there's the party (to go to) this evening(최소한 오늘 저녁에는 갈 만한 파티가 있잖아)."

"If nothing else, you should send him a card(적어도 그에게 카드 한 장은 보내야지)."

콜린스 사전은 'if nothing else'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can say 'if nothing else' to indicate that what you are mentioning is, in your opinion, the only good thing in a particular situation(당신 의견에 당신이 언급하는 것이 특정한 상황에서 유일하게 좋은 것임을 나타내기 위해 'if nothing else'라고 말한다)."

"If nothing else, you'll really enjoy meeting them(적어도 그들을 만나면 즐거울 거야)."

맥밀란 사전은 'if nothing else'를 "used for mentioning what you think may be the only good aspect of something or the only good reason for doing something(어떤 것의 유일한 좋은 측면 또는 어떤 일을 하는 데 유일한 타당한 이유일 수 있는 것을 언급하는 데 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.
