케임브릿지 사전은 'off the cuff'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If you speak off the cuff, you say something without having prepared or thought about your words first(off the cuff 하게 말한다면, 어떤 것을 미리 준비하거나 무얼 말할지 먼저 생각해 보는 일 없이 말하는 것이다)"

"I hadn't prepared a speech so I just said a few words off the cuff(연설을 준비하지 않아서, 그냥 몇 마디를 즉흥적으로 했다)."

"an off-the-cuff remark(즉흥적인 발언)"

콜린스 사전은 'off-the-cuff'를 이렇게 설명했다. "An off-the-cuff remark is made without being prepared or thought about in advance(off-the-cuff한 발언은 미리 준비하거나 생각하지 않고 하는 것이다)."

"I didn't mean any offence. It was a flippant, off-the-cuff remark(불쾌하게 하려고 한 말은 아니었어. 경솔한, 즉흥 발언이었다고)."

맥밀란 사전은 'off-the-cuff'를 이렇게 풀이했다. "if you say something off-the-cuff, you do not plan it or think about it first(어떤 것을 off-the-cuff 하게 한다면, 미리 그것을 계획하거나 그것에 대해 생각해 보지 않는 것이다)"
