케임브릿지 사전은 'tardy'를 "slow or late in happening or arriving(일어나거나 도착하는 데 느리거나 늦은)"이라고 정의했다.

"Dinner was somewhat delayed on account of David's rather tardy arrival(데이비드가 다소 늦게 도착해서 저녁 식사는 어느 정도 지체되었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'tardy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something or someone as tardy, you think that they are later than they should be or later than expected(어떤 것이나 사람을 tardy 하다고 묘사하면, 당신은 그들이 마땅히 그래야 하는 것보다, 또는 기대되는 것보다 늦다고 생각한다는 의미이다)."

"He wept for the loss of his mother and his tardy recognition of her affection(그는 어머니를 잃고 뒤늦게 그녀의 애정을 깨달아 눈물 흘렸다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'tardy'를 "arriving late(늦게 도착하는)"라고 풀이했다.
