케임브릿지 사전은 'discretion'을 "the right to choose something, or to choose to do something, according to what seems most suitable in a particular situation(특정 상황에서 가장 적절해 보이는 바에 따라 어떤 것을 선택하거나 어떤 것을 하기로 선택할 권리)"이라고 정의했다.

"Payment in lieu of notice to redundant workers is at the company's discretion(정리 해고 당한 노동자들에게 알리는 대신 급료를 지급하는 것은 기업의 재량이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'at the discretion of someone'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If something happens at someone's discretion, it can happen only if they decide to do it or give their permission(어떤 일이 at someone's discretion 하게 일어난다면, 그들이 그것을 하기로 결정하거나 허가를 내려야 일어날 수 있는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"We may vary the limit at our discretion and will notify you of any change(제한은 우리의 재량에 따라 바뀔 수 있고, 변하는 점이 있다면 알려 드리겠습니다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'discretion'을 "the right or ability to make a judgment or decision(판단 또는 결정을 내릴 수 있는 권리 또는 능력)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Shops will exchange unwanted goods entirely at their discretion(가게들은 더 이상 원하지 않는 물품들을 재량껏 교환할 것이다)."

"Teachers must be allowed to exercise their own discretion in choosing suitable classroom materials(교사들은 적절한 교실 물품을 고르는 데 재량을 발휘할 수 있어야 했다)."
