케임브릿지 사전은 'commitment'를 "something that you must do or deal with that takes your time(당신이 해야만 하는 또는 처리해야만 하는, 당신의 시간을 요구하는 것)"라고 정의했다.

"family/work commitments(가족/직장 일)"

"I've got too many commitments at the moment to do an evening class(저녁 수업을 듣기에는 지금 당장은 할 일이 너무 많아서요)."

"Having a dog is a big commitment(개를 키운다는 것은 큰 책임이 따르는 일이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'commitment'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A commitment is something which regularly takes up some of your time because of an agreement you have made or because of responsibilities that you have(commitment는 당신이 했던 합의 또는 당신의 책임 때문에 정기적으로 당신의 시간을 요구하는 일이다)."
