케임브릿지 사전은 'lost cause'를 "someone or something that has no chance of succeeding(성공할 가능성이 전혀 없는 사람 또는 사물)"이라고 정의했다.

"I used to try to get him to do some exercise but then decided he was a lost cause(그에게 운동 좀 시키려고 애쓰곤 했는데, 그는 가망이 없다고 정해 버렸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'lost cause'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you refer to something or someone as a lost cause, you mean that people's attempts to change or influence them have no chance of succeeding(어떤 사물 또는 사람을 lost cause라고 한다면, 그들이 바뀌거나 그들에게 영향을 줄 시도는 성공할 기능성이 전혀 없다는 뜻이다)."

"They do not want to expend energy in what, to them, is a lost cause(그들은 그들이 보기에 성공할 가망이 없는 것에 에너지를들이고 싶어 하지 않는다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'lost cause'를 "someone or something that will never succeed or improve(절대 성공하거나 개선되지 않을 사람 또는 사물)"라고 풀이했다.
