케임브릿지 사전은 'eggcorn'을 "a word or phrase that a person wrongly thinks is another word or phrase that sounds similar, for example "eggcorn" instead of "acorn"(다른 단어 또는 구절과 비슷하게 들리는 단어 또는 구절, 예를 들어 "acorn"(도토리) "eggcorn"이라고 하는 것)"이라고 정의했다.

"Language Log mentions the eggcorn "wedding vowels" as a variant of "wedding vows"(Langauge Log는 "wedding vows(결혼 서약)의 변종으로 "wedding vowels"라는, 발음이 비슷한 표현을 언급한다)."

콜린스 사전은 'eggcorn'을 "a malapropism or misspelling arising from similarity between the sound of the misspelled or misused word and the correct one in the accent of the person making the mistake(실수하는 사람의 액센트 때문에 철자가틀린, 또는 잘못 사용된 단어와 정확한 단어와 유사성에서 유래한, 말라프로피즘이나 잘못된 철자)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'eggcorn'을 "a word or phrase that is misheard leading to a different word or spelling being substituted for the correct one; for example, ‘tow the line’ instead of ‘toe the line’(잘못 들어서 정확한 단어 대신에 다른 단어 또는 다른 철자로 여겨지는 단어 또는 구절; 예를 들어 'toe the line(시키는 대로 하다)' 대신에 'tow the line'이라고 잘못 말하는 것)"라고 풀이했다.
