[영어 공부] tone-deaf((남의 감정[기분] 등에) 무감각한[무신경한])

 

'tone-deaf'는 원래 '음치인'이라는 뜻인데, 남의 감정, 기분, 분위기 등에 '무감각한, 무신경한'이라는 뜻도 가지고 있다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'tone-deaf'를 "not understanding how people feel about something, or what is needed in a particular situation(사람들이 어떤 것, 또는 특정한 상황에서 필요한 것에 대해 어떻게 느끼는지 이해하지 못하는)"이라고 정의했다.

"Many politicians are tone-deaf to the anxieties of the average voter(많은 정치인들은 평범한 유권자들의 불안감에 무감각하다)."

"People in the streets here are angry about his tone-deaf response to the criticisms(이곳 길거리의 사람들은 비판에 무감각한 그의 반응에 화가 나 있다)."

메리암웹스터 사전은 'tone-deaf'를 "having or showing an obtuse insensitivity or lack of perception particularly in matters of public sentiment, opinion, or taste(특히 여론, 대중의 의견, 또는 취향의 문제에 대해 둔한 무감각한 또한 지각력의 부족을 가진 또는 그런 것을 보이는)"라고 설명했다.

맥밀란 사전은 'tone-deaf'를 "insensitive to the nuances or sensitivities of a situation or issue(어떤 상황이나 이슈의 뉘앙스나 예민한 문제에 대해 무감각한)"라고 풀이했다.
