케임브릿지 사전은 'exonerate'를 "to show or state that someone or something is not guilty of something(어떤 사람 또는 사물이 어떤 것에 대해 유죄가 아니라고 보이거나 발언하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The report exonerated the crew from all responsibility for the collision(그 보고서는 그 팀이 충돌에 대해 책임이 전혀 없다고 밝혀 주었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'exonerate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If a court, report, or person in authority exonerates someone, they officially say or show that that person is not responsible for something wrong or unpleasant that has happened(법정, 보고서, 또는 권력자가 어떤 이를 exonerate한다면, 그들이 이 사람은 과거에 발생한 잘못된, 또는 불쾌한 일에 대해 책임이 없다고 말하거나 보이는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"The official report basically exonerated everyone(그 공식 보고서는 기본적으로 모든 이들이 무죄임을 밝혀 주었다.)."

"An investigation exonerated the school from any blame(조사 결과 그 학교는 책임이 없는 것으로 밝혀졌다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'exonerate'를 "to officially state or prove that someone is not to be blamed for something(어떤 사람이 어떤 일에 대해 비난받을 수 없다고 공식적으로 발언하거나 입증하다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"The evidence completely exonerates the President(그 증거는 대통령이 무죄임을 완전하게 밝혀 주었다)."

"The report did not exonerate the soldiers of responsibility(그 보고서는 그 군인들의 무죄를 밝혀 주지 않았다)."
