케임브릿지 사전은 'whittle something down'을 "to gradually reduce the size of something or the number of people in a group(어떤 것의 크기 또는 한 그룹에 속한 사람의 수를 점차 줄이다)"이라고 정의했다.

"We had 80 applicants for the job, but we've whittled them down to six(우리는 그 자리에 80명의 지원자가 있었는데, 6명으로 줄였습니다)."

콜린스 사전은 'whittle down'을 이렇게 설명했다. "To whittle down a group or thing means to gradually make it smaller(어떤 그룹이나 사물을 whittle down하는 것은 그것을 점차 작게 만드는 것이다)."
