케임브릿지 사전은 'dependable'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone or something is dependable, you can have confidence in him, her, or it(어떤 사람이나 사물이 dependable 하다면, 그 사람 또는 그것을 신뢰할 수 있는 것이다)"

"I need someone dependable to take care of the children while I'm at work(나는 내가 일하는 동안 아이들을 돌봐 줄, 믿을 만한 사람이 필요하다)."

"a dependable car(신뢰할 만한 차)"

콜린스 사전은 'dependable'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone or something is dependable, you approve of them because you feel that you can be sure that they will always act consistently or sensibly, or do what you need them to do(어떤 사물 또는 사람이 dependable 하다면, 그들이 언제나 지속적으로 또는 합리적으로 행동할 것이라고, 또는 당신이 그들에게 하기를 바라는 것들을 할 거라고 확신할 수 있다고 느끼기 때문에 그들을 긍정적으로 생각하는 것이다)." 아주 긍정적인(approval) 뉘앙스이다.

"He was a good friend, a dependable companion(그는 좋은 친구이고 신뢰할 수 있는 동반자이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'dependable'을 "이렇게 풀이했다. "a dependable person always behaves in a sensible way and does what they say they will do(dependable 한 사람은 언제나 합리적으로 행동하고 자신이 할 거라고 말하는 일들을 하는 사람이다)"
