케임브릿지 사전은 'hard-pressed'를 "having a lot of difficulties doing something, especially because there is not enough time or money(특히 시간이나 돈이 충분하지 않기 때문에 어떤 일을 하는 데 큰 어려움을 겪는)"라고 정의했다.

"The latest education reforms have put extra pressure on teachers who are already hard-pressed(최근의 교육 개혁안은 이미 곤란한 상황에 처한 교사들에게 더 많은 압력을 가한다)."

"Because of shortages, the emergency services were hard-pressed to deal with the accident(물자 부족 때문에 응급 서비스는 그 사고에 대처하기 어려웠다)."

"Most people would be hard-pressed (= would find it difficult) to name more than half a dozen members of the government(대부분의 이들은 정부 구성원 중 여섯 명 이상의 이름을 대기 어려워할 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hard-pressed'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you will be hard-pressed to do something, you will have great difficulty doing it(무엇을 하기에 hard-pressed 할 것이라면, 그것을 하는데 큰 어려움을 겪는 것이다)."

"This year the airline will be hard-pressed to make a profit(올해 그 항공사는 수익을 내기 힘들 것이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'be hard-pressed (to do something)'를 "used for saying that something is difficult to do or is unlikely to happen(어떤 것을 하기 어렵거나 어떤 것이 일어나기 어렵다고 말할 때 쓰는 말)"이라고 풀이했다.

"You’d be hard-pressed to meet a nicer person(그보다 더 친절한 사람을 만나기는 어려울 것이다)."
