케임브릿지 사전은 'compulsive'를 "doing something a lot and unable to stop doing it(어떤 것을 많이 하며 멈출 수 없는)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'compulsive'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You use compulsive to describe people or their behaviour when they cannot stop doing something wrong, harmful, or unnecessary(compulsive는 어떤 잘못된, 해로운, 또는 불필요한 일을 하는 것을 멈출 수 없을 때 그 사람 또는 그들의 행동을 묘사하기 위해 쓴다)."
