케임브릿지 사전은 'hammer out'을 "to reach an agreement or solution after a lot of argument or discussion(긴 논쟁 또는 논의 이후 합의에 다다르다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Three years after the accident the lawyers finally managed to hammer out a settlement with the insurance company(그 사고로부터 3년이 지난 후 변호사들은 마침내 보험사와 합의를 볼 수 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hammer out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If people hammer out an agreement or treaty, they succeed in producing it after a long or difficult discussion(사람들이 어떤 협정이나 조약을 hammer out 한다면, 그들은 길거나 어려운 논의 이후 그것을 만드는 데 성공하는 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'hammer out'을 "to reach a decision or agreement after discussing it or arguing about it for a long time(오랫동안 논의하거나 언쟁을 나눈 후 결정이나 합의에 다다르다)"이라고 풀이했다.

"A new deal was hammered out between the two banks(두 은행 사이에 새로운 거래가 타결됐다)."
