케임브릿지 사전은 'malcontent'를 "a person who is not satisfied with the way things are, and who complains a lot and is unreasonable and difficult to deal with(현재 상황에 만족하지 않고 많이 불평하며 불합리하고 대하기 어려운 사람)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'malcontent'를 설명했다. "You can describe people as malcontents when you disapprove of the fact that they are dissatisfied with a situation and want it to change(당신은 어떤 사람이 상황에 불만족하고 그걸 바꾸고 싶어 한다는 사실을 못마땅하게 여길 때 그들을 malcontent라고 묘사할 수 있다)." 포멀(formal)하고 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"Five years ago a band of malcontents, mainly half-educated radicals, seized power(5년 전 한 무리의 불평 분자들, 대체로 교육을 제대로 받지 못한 급진주의자들이 권력을 잡았다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'malcontent'를 "someone who is not happy or satisfied(행복하거나 만족하지 않는 사람)"라고 풀이했다.
