[영어 공부] attrition((반복 공격 등으로 적의 세력을 약화시키는) 소모)

 

'attrition'은 '(반복 공격 등으로 적의 세력을 약화시키는) 소모'라는 뜻인데 가장 쉬운 예가 바로 포켓몬을 잡는 방법이다.

포켓몬은 대개 에너지가 간당간당할수록 잡힐 확률이 높아서 플레이어들은 일단 포켓몬은 죽지 않을 정도로만 줘패놓고 몬스터볼을 던지게 마련이다. 이런 게 'attrition'이다.

케임브릿지 사전은 'attrition'을 "gradually making something weaker and destroying it, especially the strength or confidence of an enemy by repeatedly attacking it(특히 반복적으로 공격함으로써 적의 힘 또는 자신감을 점차 약하게 만들고 파괴하게 하는 것)"이라고 정의했다.

"Terrorist groups and the government have been engaged in a costly war of attrition since 2008(테러리스트 그룹들과 정부는 2008년부터 계속 큰 비용이 드는 소모전을 해 오고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 'attrition'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Attrition is a process in which you steadily reduce the strength of an enemy by continually attacking them(attrition은 계속 적을 공격함으로써 적의 힘을 꾸준히 깎아먹는 과정이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"The rebels have declared a cease-fire in their war of attrition against the government(반군은 정부에 대항하는 소모전에서 휴전을 선포했다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'attrition'을 "the process of making an enemy physically and mentally weaker by continuously attacking them(적을 계속해서 공격하여 신체적으로, 그리고 정신적으로 약하게 만드는 과정)"이라고 풀이했다.

"Since 1985 they had been fighting a bloody war of attrition with hundreds of casualties on both sides(1985년부터 그들은 양측에 수백 명의 사상자를 낸, 피 흘리는 소모전을 해 왔다)."
