케임브릿지 사전은 'cover your tracks'를 "to hide or destroy the things that show where you have been or what you have been doing(당신이 어디 있었는지 또는 무엇을 했는지를 보여 주는 것들을 숨기거나 파괴하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Roberts covered his tracks by throwing the knife in the river(로버츠는 칼을 강에 버림으로써 증거를 인멸했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'cover your tracks'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone covers their tracks, they hide or destroy evidence of their identity or their actions, because they want to keep them secret(누군가 cover your tracks 한다면, 그들은 그것을 비밀로 지키고 싶기 때문에 자신의 정체나 행동의 증거를 숨기거나 파괴하는 것이다)."
