케임브릿지 사전은 'decoy'를 "something or someone used to trick or confuse people, especially something or someone that is not what they appear to be(사람들을 속이거나 혼란스럽게 하기 위해 쓰이는 사물 또는 사람, 특히 보이는 것과 다른 어떤 사물 또는 사물)"라고 정의했다.

"Air Force One flew ahead as a decoy, with the President in another plane behind(에어 포스 원이 바람잡이로 앞서 날았고, 대통령이 탄 다른 비행기가 그 뒤를 따랐다)."

"These attacks could be a decoy, a manoeuvre to throw everyone off guard(이 공격들은 사람들의 경계를 풀기 위한 묘책이자 사람들을 유인하기 위한 것일지도 모른다)."

콜린스 사전은 'decoy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you refer to something or someone as a decoy, you mean that they are intended to attract people's attention and deceive them, for example by leading them into a trap or away from a particular place(어떤 사물 또는 사람을 decoy라고 부른다면, 예를 들어 함정으로 사람들을 끌어들이거나 특정한 곳에서부터 멀리 떨어뜨림으로써, 사람의 관심을 끌고 그들을 속이기 위해 의도된 것이라는 뜻이다)."

"Nick acted as a decoy after the dog attacked a group of children swimming in the river(닉은 그 개가 강에서 수영하는 한 무리의 어린이들을 공격했을 때 그 개를 유인하는 역을 맡았다)." 

"He was booked on a flight leaving that day, but that was just a decoy(그는 그날 떠나는 비행기를 예매했으나, 그것은 유인용 계략이었다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'decoy'를 "a person or thing that you use to trick someone into going somewhere or doing something(누군가를 어디로 가거나 무언가를 하도록 속이기 위해 이용하는 사람 또는 사물)"이라고 풀이했다.
