케임브릿지 사전은 'variant'를 "something that is slightly different from other similar things(기타 비슷한 것들과 약간 다른 것)"라고 정의했다.

"Scientists are seeing a growing list of genes in which genetic variants contribute to multiple diseases(과학자들은 유전적 변종이 다양한 병에 기여하는 유전자의 목록이 점점 더 커지는 것을 보고 있다)."

"There are many colas on the market now, all variants on the original drink(현재 시장에는 많은 콜라가 있는데, 모두 원조 음료수의 변종이다)."

"The manufacturers roll out new variants of existing processors every few months(제조업자들은 기존 프로세서의 새로운 변종을 몇 달 간격으로 내보낸다)."

콜린스 사전은 'variant'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A variant of a particular thing is something that has a different form to that thing, although it is related to it(특정한 것의 variant는 그것과 연관이 있음에도 불구하고 그것과 다른 형태를 가진 것이다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'variant'를 "something that is related to another thing but is not exactly the same(다른 것과 관련 있지만 완전히 똑같지는 않은 것)"이라고 풀이했다.

"There are many variants on the basic structure(기본 구조의 많은 변형 버전이 있다)."
