케임브릿지 사전은 'despise'를 "to feel a strong dislike for someone or something because you think that that person or thing is bad or has no value(어떤 사람이나 사물이 나쁘거나 가치가 없다고 생각하기 때문에 그들에 대해 강렬한 미움을 느끼다)"라고 정의했다.

"The two groups despise each other(두 그룹은 서로를 경멸한다)."

"She despised him for the way he treated her sister(그녀는 그가 그녀의 자매를 대하는 방식 때문에 그를 경멸했다)."

"He despised himself for being such a coward(그는 겁쟁이인 자기 자신을 경멸했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'despise'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you despise something or someone, you dislike them and have a very low opinion of them(어떤 사람이나 사물을 despise 한다면, 그들을 싫어하며 그들을 아주 낮게 평가하는 것이다)."
