케임브릿지 사전은 'undercurrent'를 "an emotion, belief, or characteristic of a situation that is hidden and usually negative or dangerous but that has some effect(숨겨진, 그리고 대체로 부정적이거나 위험한, 어느 정도 영향을 끼치는 어떤 상황의 감정, 믿음, 또는 특징)"라고 정의했다.
