케임브릿지 사전은 'on the lam'을 "escaping, especially from the police(도망치는, 특히 경찰로부터 도망치는)"라고 정의했다.

"The robbers were on the lam for several days before they were caught."

콜린스 사전은 'on the lam'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone is on the lam or if they go on the lam, they are trying to escape or hide from someone such as the police or an enemy(어떤 사람이 on the lam 하거나 go on the lam 한다면, 경찰이나 적수 같은 사람에게서 도망치거나 숨으려고 노력하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"He was on the lam for seven years(그는 7년간 도주했다)."

맥밀란 사전은 'on the lam'을 "escaping or hiding from someone, especially the police(어떤 사람, 특히 경찰으로부터 도망치거나 숨는)"라고 풀이했다.
