[영어 공부] hard-hearted(무정한, 냉담한)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'hard-hearted'를 이렇게 정의했다. "If someone is hard-hearted, they are not kind or not able to feel sympathy(어떤 사람이 hard-hearted하다면, 그들은 친절하지 않거나 동정심을 느낄 수 없는 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'hard-hearted'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe someone as hard-hearted, you disapprove of the fact that they have no sympathy for other people and do not care if people are hurt or made unhappy(어떤 사람을 hard-hearted라고 묘사한다면, 그들이 타인에 대한 동정심이 없고 그들이 상처 받거나 불행해져도 신경쓰지 않는다는 점을 못마땅하게 여기는 것이다)." 못마땅해하는(disapproval) 뉘앙스이다.

"You would have to be pretty hard-hearted not to feel something for him(그에게 아무런 감정을 느끼지 않으려면 꽤나 무정한 사람이라야 할 것이다)." 

맥밀란 사전은 'hard-hearted'를 "not able to feel sympathy or other positive emotions(동정심이나 다른 긍정적인 감정을 느낄 수 없는)"라고 풀이했다.
