케임브릿지 사전은 'console'을 "to make someone who is sad or disappointed feel better, usually by giving them comfort or sympathy(대개 위로나 동정을 표현해서 슬프거나 실망한 사람의 기분이 나아지게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"Her friends tried to console her, telling her "Everything will be fine."(그녀의 친구들은 그녀에게 "모두 다 괜찮아질 거야."라고 말하며 그녀를 위로하려 했다)"

"He was consoled by the fact that he was young enough to try again the following year(그는 그가 다음 해에 다시 시도해 볼 수 있을 정도로 젊다는 사실에 안도했다)."
