케임브릿지 사전은 'subpar'를 "used to describe something that is below average, or below what is expected(평균 이하, 또는 기대 이하인 것을 묘사하기 위해 쓰는 말)"라고 정의했다.

"The economy posted sub-par annual growth of less than 2% for four straight quarters(경제는 4사분기 연속으로 2% 이하의, 수준 이하의 연성장을 기록했다)."

"Does he deserve such a generous retirement package, considering the company's subpar performance?(회사가 수준 이하의 실적을 내는 걸 감안한다면 그가 정말로 그렇게 관대한 퇴직금을 받을 자격이 있나?)"
