케임브릿지 사전은 'engulf'를 "to surround and cover something or someone completely(어떤 사물이나 사람을 둘러싸고 완전히 감싸다)"라고 정의했다.

"The flames rapidly engulfed the house(화염이 재빨리 그 집을 에워쌌다)."

"Northern areas of the country were engulfed by/in a snowstorm last night(그 나라의 북쪽 지역은 어젯밤 눈사태에 에워싸였다)."

"The war is threatening to engulf the entire region(그 전쟁이 지역 전체를 집어삼킬 위험이 있다)."
