케임브릿지 사전은 'would-be'를 "wanting or trying to be(~이 되고 싶어 하는, 또는 그렇게 되려고 하는)"라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'woudl-be'를 이렇게 설명했다. "You can use would-be to describe someone who wants or attempts to do a particular thing. For example, a would-be writer is someone who wants to be a writer(특정한 것이 되기를 원하는, 또는 그렇게 되려고 시도하는 사람을 묘사하기 위해 would-be를 쓸 수 있다. 예를 들어, would-be 작가는 작가가 되고 싶어 하는 사람이다)."
