케임브릿지 사전은 'preternatural'을 "more than is usual or natural(흔하거나 자연스러운 것 이상인)"이라고 정의했다.

"Anger gave me preternatural strength, and I managed to force the door open(화는 나에게 초자연적인 힘을 주었고, 힘을 주어 그 문을 억지로 열 수 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'preternatural'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Preternatural abilities, qualities, or events are very unusual in a way that might make you think that unknown forces are involved(preternatural한 능력, 자질, 또는 사건은 알 수 없는 힘이 관여했다고 믿게 만들 정도로 아주 특이한 것들이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"Parents had an almost preternatural ability to understand what was going on in their children's minds(부모들은 자기 아이들의 마음속에 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지 이해할 수 있는 거의 초자연적인 능력이 있었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'preternatural'을 "​that does not seem natural; that cannot be explained by natural laws(자연적이지 않은; 자연법으로 설명될 수 없는)"라고 풀이했다.
