케임브릿지 사전은 'streetwise'를 "able to deal successfully with dangerous or difficult situations in big towns or cities where there is a lot of crime(범죄가 많이 일어나는 큰 마을이나 도시의 위험하거나 어려운 상황에 성공적으로 잘 대처할 수 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"McDonald was as streetwise as any of the criminals he had investigated(맥도널드는 그가 조사해 온 그 어떤 범죄자들만큼이나 도시 생활에 밝았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'streetwise'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone who is streetwise knows how to deal with difficult or dangerous situations in big cities(streetwise한 사람은 큰 도시에서의 어렵거나 위험한 상황들을 대처할 줄 아는 사람이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

"The experience did make us tough and streetwise(그 경험은 우리를 거칠고 세상 물정에 밝게 만들었다)." 

"...a cocky, streetwise kid who thought he knew it all(...모든 걸 다 안다고 생각하는, 자만심에 차고 세상 물정에 밝은 아이)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'streetwise'를 "​having the knowledge and experience that is needed to deal with the difficulties and dangers of life in a big city(큰 도시에서의 삶에 따르는 어려움과 위험에 대처하기 위해 필요한 지식과 경험을 가진)"라고 풀이했다.

"Kids seem much more streetwise these days(아이들은 요즘 훨씬 더 세상 물정에 밝은 것 같다)."
