케임브릿지 사전은 'prodigy'를 "someone with a very great ability that usually shows itself when that person is a young child(어떤 사람이 어린아이일 때, 아주 대단한 재능을 보이는 사람)"라고 정의했다.

"The 16-year-old tennis prodigy is the youngest player ever to reach the Olympic finals(16세의 테니스 영재는 올림픽 결승전에 참여한, 가장 어린 선수이다)."

"He read in the paper about a mathematical prodigy who was attending university at the age of twelve(그는 12세에 대학에 입학한 수학 영재의 이야기를 신문에서 읽었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'prodigy'를 이렇게 설명했다. "A prodigy is someone young who has a great natural ability for something such as music, mathematics, or sport(prodigy는 음악,수학, 스포츠 등에 타고난 대단한 능력이 있는 젊은 사람을 말한다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'prodigy'를 "a young person whose intelligence or skill is unusually good for their age(지성이나 기술이 나이에 비해 드물게 뛰어난 어린 사람)"라고 풀이했다.
