케임브릿지 사전은 'retaliate'를 "to hurt someone or do something harmful to someone because they have done or said something harmful to you(상대가 당신에게 상처를 주기 위해 어떤 일을 하거나 어떤 말을 했기 때문에, 그 상대를 상처 주거나 그들에게 해가 되는 일을 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"If someone insults you, don't retaliate as it only makes the situation worse(누군가가 당신을 모욕한다면 복수하지 마라. 그것은 오히려 상황을 나쁘게 만들 것이기 때문이다)."
