케임브릿지 사전은 'residual'을 "remaining after most of something has gone(어떤 것의 대부분이 떠난 이후 남아 있는)"이라고 정의했다.

"The scanner checks travel documents for residual traces of explosives(그 스캐너는 폭발물의 잔류량이 남아 있는지 보기 위해 여행 서류를 확인한다)."

"I still felt some residual bitterness ten years after my divorce(나는 이혼 후 10년이 지난 후에도 씁쓸함이 남아 있는 걸 느꼈다)."

콜린스 사전은 'residual'을 이렇게 설명했다. "Residual is used to describe what remains of something when most of it has gone(residual은 어떤 것의 대부분이 떠난 후에 남아 있는 것을 묘사하기 위해 쓰인다)."
