[영어 공부] aspirant(출세[승리]를 염원[열망]하는 사람, 포부가 큰 사람)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'aspirant'를 "someone who very much wants to achieve something(어떤 것을 성취하기를 너무나 원하는 사람)"이라고 정의했다.

"an aspirant to the throne(왕좌를 노리는 사람)"

콜린스 사전은 'aspirant'를 이렇게 설명했다. "Someone who is an aspirant to political power or to an important job has a strong desire to achieve it(정치적 권력 또는 중요한 일자리의 aspirant인 사람은 그것을 성취하려는 강한 욕망을 가진 사람이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"...the young aspirant to power(...권력을 갈망하는 젊은이)." 

"Any aspirant to the presidency here must be seriously rich(이곳에서 대통령직을 염원하는 이라면 무척 부유해야만 한다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'aspirant'를 "a person with a strong desire to achieve a position of importance or to win a competition(중요한 자리를 성취하거나 경쟁에서 이기기려는 강력한 욕망을 가진 사람)"이라고 풀이했다.

"aspirants to the title of world champion(세계 챔피언의 타이틀을 얻으려는 사람들)"

"They were asked to select the party candidate from 20 aspirants(그들은 20명의 야심찬 사람들에서 공천 후보를 선택할 것을 부탁받았다)."
