케임브릿지 사전은 'equivocate'를 "to speak in a way that is intentionally not clear and confusing to other people, especially to hide the truth(고의적으로 명확하지 않게, 다른 사람들에게 헷갈리게 말하다, 특히 진실을 가리기 위해 그렇게 하다)"라고 정의했다.

"She accused the minister of equivocating, claiming that he had deliberately avoided telling the public how bad the problem really was(그녀는 장관이 그 문제가 얼마나 나쁜지를 대중에게 말하기를 고의적으로 피한다고 주장하며 얼버무린다는 혐의를 제기했다)."
