케임브릿지 사전은 'ferret out'을 "to discover someone or something, esp. information, after searching(어떤 사람이나 사물, 특히 정보를 찾은 후 발견하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"Officials are attempting to ferret out abuses in the welfare program(공무원들은 복지 프로그램이 악용되는 경우를 찾으려고 노력 중이다)."

"If there are others who are responsible it might be worth an attempt to ferret them out(이번 일에 책임이 있는 자들이 또 있다면, 그들을 찾아내려고 노력할 가치가 있을 듯하다)."

콜린스 사전은 'ferret out'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you ferret out some information, you discover it by searching for it very thoroughly(어떤 정보를 ferret out 한다면, 아주 샅샅이 찾아서 발견하는 것이다)." 인포멀(informal)한 표현이다.

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'ferret out'을 "to discover information or to find somebody/something by searching carefully and completely, asking a lot of questions, etc.(꼼꼼히 전체를 다 뒤지거나 질문을 많이 하는 방법 등으로 정보 또는 어떤 사람/사물을 발견하다)"라고 풀이했다.
