케임브릿지 사전은 'inordinately'를 "in a way that is much more than usual or expected(보통 또는 기대되는 것 이상으로)"라고 정의했다.

"She was inordinately fond of her pets(그녀는 지나치게 자기 애완 동물을 아낀다)."

"The day was inordinately hot(날이 너무 더웠다)."

콜린스 사전은 'inordinately'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you describe something as inordinate, you are emphasizing that it is unusually or excessively great in amount or degree(어떤 것을 inordinate이라고 묘사한다면, 그것이 특이하게 또는 과하게 양이나 많거나 정도가 심하다는 점을 강조하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)하고 강조하는(emphasis) 표현이다.

"They spend an inordinate amount of time talking(그들은 과도하게 많은 시간을 이야기하는 데 쓴다)."

"...their inordinate number of pets(...과하게 많은 수의 애완 동물)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'inordinately'를 "​to a far higher degree than is usual or expected(보통 또는 기대되는 것보다 훨씬 더 높은 정도로)"라고 풀이했다.
