케임브릿지 사전은 'extenuating'을 "causing a wrong act to be judged less seriously by giving reasons for it(잘못된 행위에 대한 이유를 댐으로써 덜 심각하게 판단되도록 하는)"이라고 정의했다.

"She was found guilty of theft, but because of extenuating circumstances was not sent to prison(그녀는 절도에 관해서 유죄 판결을 받았지만, 정상 참작이 가능한 상황 덕분에 교도소에 보내지지는 않았다)."

"The lack of other options was an extenuating factor(다른 선택지가 없었다는 사실이 정상 참작이 가능한 요인이었다)."

콜린스 사전은 'extenuating'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that there are extenuating circumstances for a bad situation or wrong action, you mean that there are reasons or factors which partly excuse it(나쁜 상황 또는 잘못된 행동에 대한 extenuating한 상황이 있다고 말하면, 부분적으로 그것을 용서할 수 있는 이유 또는 요인이 있다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"The defendants admitted their guilt, but insisted that there were extenuating circumstances(피고는 유죄를 인정했지만, 정상을 참작할 만한 여지가 있었다고 주장했다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'extenuating'을 "showing reasons why a wrong or illegal act, or a bad situation, should be judged less seriously or excused(잘못된 또는 불법적인 행위, 또는 나쁜 상황이 덜 심각하게 판단되거나 용서되어야 하는지에 관한 이유를 보여 주는)"라고 풀이했다.

"There were extenuating circumstances and the defendant did not receive a prison sentence(정상 참작의 여지가 있었고 피고는 교도소 형을 받지는 않았다)."

"Cases of illness and other extenuating circumstances that may have affected a student’s performance will be dealt with by a personal tutor(질병이나 학생의 성적에 영향을 주었을 수도 있는, 다른 정상 참작의 요인은 개인 가정 교사에 의해 처리될 것이다)."
