케임브릿지 사전은 'brook'을 "to not allow or accept something, especially a difference of opinion or intention(어떤 것을, 특히, 다른 의견이나 의도를 허용하거나 받아들이지 않다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She won't brook any criticism of her work(그녀는 자기 작업물에 그 어떤 비판도 허용하지 않을 것이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'brook'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone in a position of authority will brook no interference or opposition, they will not accept any interference or opposition from others(권력의 지위에 있는 어떤 사람이 방해나 반대를 brook 하지 않는다면, 다른 사람들로부터의 방해나 반대를 받아들이지 않는 것이다.)."
