케임브릿지 사전은 'play up'을 "to emphasize a particular quality or part of something, or make it seem more important than it really is, usually for your own advantage(대체로 자신의 이익을 위해 특정한 자질이나 무언가의 일부를 강조하거나, 실제보다 더 중요해 보이게 만들다)"라고 정의했다.

"The official report plays up the likely benefits of the plan, but glosses over the costs(공식 보고서는 그 계획의 혜택을 강조하는 반면, 비용은 적당히 얼버무리고 넘어갔다)."

콜린스 사전은 'play up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you play up something, you emphasize it and try to make people believe that it is important(어떤 것을 play up 한다면, 그것을 강조하고 사람들로 하여금 그것이 중요하다고 믿게 만들려고 노력하는 것이다.)."
