케임브릿지 사전은 'gravitas'를 "seriousness and importance of manner, causing feelings of respect and trust in others(타인에게 존경심과 신뢰감을 유발하는, 진지함과 예의의 중요성)"라고 정의했다.

"He's an effective enough politician but somehow he lacks the statesmanlike gravitas of a world leader(그는 실질적으로 정치인이나 다름없지만, 그는 세계 리더의 정치인 같은 진지함이 없다)."

콜린스 사전은 'gravitas'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone has gravitas, you mean that you respect them because they seem serious and intelligent(어떤 사람이 gravitas를 가졌다면, 그들이 진지하고 지적으로 보이기 때문에 당신이 그들을 존중한다는 뜻이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"He is pale, dark, and authoritative, with the gravitas you might expect of a Booker prize winner(그는 부커상 수상자에게 기대할 만한, 창백하고, 어두우며, 권위적인 사람이었다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'gravitas'를 "the quality of being serious(진지한 자질)"라고 풀이했다.

"a book of extraordinary gravitas(무척 진지한 책)"
