[영어 공부] not mince your words(거리낌없이 분명히 말하다, 단도직입적으로 말하다)

 

케임브릿지 사전은 'not mince (your) words'를 "to say what you mean clearly and directly, even if you upset people by doing this(그 과정에서 다른 사람들의 기분을 상하게 하더라도, 자신이 말하려는 바를 명확하고 직접적으로 말하다)"라고 정의했다.

"The report does not mince words, describing the situation as "ludicrous"(그 보고서는 그 상황을 "터무니없다"라고 표현하며 단도직입적으로 말했다)."

콜린스 사전은 'not mince (your) words'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone does not mince their words, you mean that they speak in a forceful and direct way, especially when saying something unpleasant to someone(어떤 사람이 not mince their words 한다면, 그들이 특히 불쾌한 말을 누군가에게 할 때 단호하고 직접적으로 말한다는 뜻이다)."

"The doctors didn't mince their words, and predicted the worst(그 의사들은 단도직입적으로 말했고, 최악의 상황을 예측했다)." 

"Never one to mince words, Carlie told her daughter that her looks were fading(언제나 거리낌없이 말하는 칼리는 딸에게 그녀의 외모가 시들고 있다고 말했다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'not mince (your) words'를 "to say exactly what you think, even if this might offend people(그것이 다른 사람의 기분을 상하게 하더라도, 자신이 생각하는 바를 정확히 말하다)"이라고 풀이했다.
