케임브릿지 사전은 'be in the drvier's seat'를 "to be in charge or in control of a situation(어떤 상황의 책임자이거나 그것을 관리하다)"이라고 정의했다.

콜린스 사전은 'in the drvier's seat'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that someone is in the driver's seat, you mean that they are in control in a situation(어떤 사람이 in the driver's seat 하다면, 그들이 그 상황을 관리하는 것이다)."

"Now he knows he's in the driver's seat and can wait for a better deal(이제 그는 자신이 유리한 입장에 있으며 더 좋은 거래를 기다릴 수 있음을 안다)." 

롱맨 사전은 'in the driving seat'(영국식)가 미국식으로는 'in the driver’s seat'이며 "controlling what happens in a situation, organization, or relationship(어떤 상황, 조직, 또는 관계에서 일어나는 일을 관리하는)"이라는 뜻이라고 풀이했다.
