케임브릿지 사전은 'toss-up'을 이렇게 정의했다. "If you describe a situation as a toss-up, you mean that either of two possibilities is equally likely(어떤 상황을 toss-up이라고 묘사한다면, 두 가능성 중 어떤 쪽도 똑같이 가능성이 있다는 뜻이다)."

"It's a toss-up between Angela and Moira for the editor's job(편집장 자리를 앤젤라와 모이라 중 누가 차지할지 그 가능성은 반반이다)."

콜린스 사전은 'toss-up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you say that it is a toss-up whether one thing will happen or another thing will happen, you mean that either result seems equally likely(어떤 일이 일어나거나 다른 일이 일어날지가 toss-up이라고 한다면, 어느 쪽의 결과도 똑같이 가능성이 있다는 뜻이다)."

"It's a toss-up whether oil prices will go up or down over the days ahead(석유 가격이 앞으로 올라갈지 내려갈지는 반반의 가능성이다)." 

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'toss-up'을 "a situation in which either of two choices, results, etc. is equally possible(두 선택, 결과 등의 어느 쪽도 똑같이 가능한 상황)"이라고 풀이했다.
