케임브릿지 사전은 'subjugation'을 "the act of defeating people or a country and ruling them in a way that allows them no freedom(사람 또는 국가를 패배시키고 그들에게 자유를 허용하지 않고 통치하는 행위)"이라고 정의했다.

"They are bravely resisting subjugation by their more powerful neighbours(그들은 그들보다 더욱 강력한 이웃에게 지배당하기를 용감하게 저항하고 있다)."

콜린스 사전은 동사형 'subjugate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone subjugates a group of people, they take complete control of them, especially by defeating them in a war(어떤 사람이 한 무리의 사람을 subjugate 한다면, 특히 그들을 전쟁에서 패배시켜서 완전히 통제하는 것이다)." 포멀(formal)한 표현이다.

"People in the region are fiercely independent and resist all attempts to subjugate them(그 지역의 사람들은 격렬히 독립적이고, 그들을 정복하려는 모든 시도에 저항한다)."

옥스퍼드 학습자 사전은 'subjugation'을 "the act of defeating somebody/something; complete control over somebody/something(어떤 사람 또는 사물을 패배시키는 행위; 어떤 사람 또는 사물에 대한 완전한 통제)"이라고 풀이했다.
