케임브릿지 사전은 'desecration'을 "the action of damaging or showing no respect towards something holy or very much respected(성스럽거나 아주 존경받는 것을 손상하거나 그것에 존경을 보이지 않는 행위)"라고 정의했다.

"People were horrified at the desecration of the cemetery(사람들은 묘지 훼손에 소름 끼쳐 했다)."

"Desecration of sacred sites and objects was widespread(신성한 장소와 사물을 훼손하는 일이 널리 퍼져 있었다)."

콜린스 사전은 동사형 'desecrate'를 이렇게 설명했다. "If someone desecrates something which is considered to be holy or very special, they deliberately damage or insult it(어떤 사람이 성스럽거나 아주 특별하다고 여겨지는 것을 desecrate 한다면, 그들은 고의적으로 이를 손상하거나 모욕하는 것이다)."
