케임브릿지 사전은 'spurn'을 "to refuse to accept something or someone because you feel that thing or person is not worth having(어떤 것 또는 사물을 받아들이기를 거부하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"She spurned my offers of help(그녀는 도와주겠다는 내 제안을 퇴짜 놓았다)."

"Ellis plays the part of the young lover spurned by his mistress(엘리스는 애인에게 퇴짜 맞은 젊은 애인 역할로 분한다)."
