케임브릿지 사전은 'shore something up'을 "to support or improve an organization, agreement, or system that is not working effectively or that is likely to fail(효과적으로 작동하지 않거나 실패할 가능성이 있는 어떤 조직, 합의, 또는 체계를 지지하거나 개선하다)"이라고 정의했다.

"The new public relations manager has the difficult task of shoring up the company's troubled image(새로운 홍보 매니저는 그 기업의 문제가 많은 이미지를 개선하는 어려운 과제를 맡았다)."

콜린스 사전은 'shore up'을 이렇게 설명했다. "If you shore up something that is weak or about to fail, you do something in order to strengthen it or support it(약하거나 실패하기 직전인 어떤 것을 shore up 한다면 그것을 강화하거나 지지하기 위해 어떤 일을 하는 것이다)."
